Next release of Ehcache is in development now. It will include the ability to go from Ehcache to Ehcache running on top of Terracotta w/o much work (just essentially pointing to your Terracotta Server in ehcache.xml).

This will also come with a special tool for cache tuning & management (much like our new Hibernate tool inside the dev-console.sh in Terracotta) for use when Terracotta is present.

We are quickly working on versions of all these visualization (tuning and management) tools for Ehcache even when Terracotta is not present but that is more work because we can't just "plug-in" to the Terracotta GUIs and services, etc. Greg Luck (ehcache CTO and community leader) is busy designing this stuff as we speak.

I don't want to promise dates quite yet but internally we are managing to very tight timelines that will get stuff into your hands to work with well before end of year.

As for Ehcache Cache Server, it is still completely maintained by the Ehcache team. It is not going to get deleted or otherwise harmed by the buyout.

Cheers,

Ari (or anyone)

Can you tell me if the 3.1.1 beta with EhCache will allow you to cache objects in EhCache without requiring serialization (implements Serializable)? In other words does it take advantage of terracotta to manage object changes/deltas?

Thanks - James.

I should have probably clarified that as the Terracotta-backed "Distributed Cache"

Ehcache 1.7 supports Terracotta-clustered caches sporting either SERIALIZATION or IDENTITY mode. You're talking about IDENTITY mode.

Note that if you want IDENTITY mode, you must use custom install, not express as express has no bytecode manipulation / no bootjar.
