who can tell me how to use the wildcard in <web-application>?

I suppose you could use * as a wildcard (am not entirely sure)

But the number of applications where you'd want to cluster sessions would be a fairly small set - so it probably is best practice to actually enumerate the full webapp-name of each application - so that you don't accidentally cluster something that you didn't intend to.
